Arab newspaper shows Porto as tourist destination

The English language, Arabic-daily newspaper "Gulf Today", based in Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates, has published an article which presents Porto as a tourist destination and a city to invest.

Although it was published in the Arts & Culture section of the paper edition of "Gulf Today", the article was written about the opening of the Dubai-Porto route by Emirates airline last week and following the presentation on the previous day in the city of Dubai by the Councillor for Economy, Tourism and Trade of Porto City Hall, Ricardo Valente.

The prestigious Arab newspaper points out that Emirates decided it was time to make a winner move and establish the Dubai-Porto direct flight. According to "Gulf Today", Amiruddin Thanawala, president of the Ismaili Community in the UAE, considers that "Porto is recognized as a global city and was European Capital of Culture in 2001, a leading industrial centre recognized for its rich cultural heritage, leisure, arts, architecture and gastronomy".

"The people of Porto are very authentic. They speak openly about their convictions", said the Portuguese ambassador in the UAE, Joaquim Moreira de Lemos. Combining his personal experiences and reality, the diplomat also emphasized the "big dimension of Porto", in the sense that the city "is the capital of entrepreneurship and industry".

In the article, "Gulf Today" also writes that "Porto offers a rich cultural heritage" and that "it is an important commercial and tourist city". This year the Mayor, Rui Moreira, in May, conferred the Keys to the city of Porto on Prince Aga Khan, the 49th spiritual hereditary Imam of Ismaili Muslims, in recognition to his contribution to building a better society.
